Abstract

The present study aims to conduct a semiotic deconstruction and analysis of the representation of gender identities and models of masculinity in the sitcom Friends. As one of the most widely viewed American television series, this media production has played a significant role in the construction and transmission of cultural patterns. The research employs a qualitative semiotic analysis strategy grounded in Roland Barthes’ structuralist model, focusing on the dual levels of denotation and connotation while examining the five narrative codes within selected key scenes. Alongside this methodological framework, theoretical concepts such as gender performativity, processes of representation, and othering are also utilized. The findings indicate that this seemingly entertaining popular product operates, in practice, as a complex ideological and discursive apparatus. The narrative mechanisms of the series introduce marginal and controversial subjects—such as homosexuality and the crisis of traditional masculinity—yet simultaneously strip them of their subversive potential. Through reducing identity-related issues to temporary misunderstandings and comedic situations, the media text neutralizes transformative possibilities within gender structures and reproduces and stabilizes the dominant heteronormative discourse. The results demonstrate that non-normative identities are accepted only under conditions of marginalization, transformation into objects of humor production, and the absence of independent agency within the narrative world. Ultimately, this critical reading reveals how mainstream media, through myth-making mechanisms, naturalizes conservative gender boundaries and absorbs difference into structures of domination.
