Abstract

Today, one of the most significant and far-reaching debates among writers, historians, and sociologists concerns the manner in which the people of Iran converted to Islam following the invasion of the Muslim Arabs and the سقوط of the Sasanian Empire. Some researchers argue that the people of Iran converted to Islam under coercion and by the force of the sword, and that this religion was imposed upon them. Others, however, maintain that after the collapse of the Sasanian Empire, Iranians immediately welcomed Islam with open arms and accepted it voluntarily. Each of these two groups presents arguments to substantiate its respective position. In the present study, adopting a scientific and impartial approach and relying on the most authoritative historical sources, we evaluated the validity and reliability of these two perspectives. The findings indicate that neither of these viewpoints is entirely correct or fully consistent with historical evidence. The people of Iran neither immediately embraced Islam with open arms nor converted to it under coercion or by the force of the sword. Following the defeat of the Sasanian Empire by the Muslim Arabs, the overwhelming majority of Iranians remained adherents of Zoroastrianism by paying the jizya (poll tax), and this situation persisted for several generations. Subsequently, later generations gradually recognized the superiority of Islam over the course of several centuries and embraced it. Therefore, the conversion of the Iranian people to Islam occurred gradually over multiple generations, without coercion and through their own free choice.
